How the American Home Has Evolved

Every era is defined by new housing trends. A look back in time shows just how much home life in America has changed over the last 40 years.

Cost: In 1969, the average sales price for an American home was around $25,000 that’s $165,360 in today’s inflation-adjusted dollars). By 2015, that price had risen to over $300,000.

Location: According to the latest census data, most Americans still prefer to buy a home in the suburbs (as was true in the 1970s). However, those that are flocking to dense urban areas are made up of mostly young, affluent, and educated individuals.

Size: In 1973, the average size of a new home was 1,660 square feet. Today, that figure has grown to an all-time high of 2,679 square feet.

Occupancy: In the early ‘70s, an average of 3.01 persons lived in a typical American home. Today, that number has shrunk to a record low of 2.54 persons.

Energy efficiency: Today, single-pane windows are a thing of the past, the traditional light bulb is being phased out, furnaces are far more efficient, insulation practices have evolved, and water- conservation features are built into every fixture and appliance.

Security: In the 70's, home alarm systems were very basic and quite expensive. Today, you can receive in-home alerts on your smart phone for less than $15 per month.
